Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen is expected to miss Nigeria’s opening Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifying matches after suffering a groin injury while playing for Galatasaray.
The Turkish champions confirmed that medical examinations carried out at Acıbadem Hospital revealed a moderate-to-severe injury to the forward’s right adductor muscle, with bleeding also detected in the affected area.
Osimhen sustained the injury during Galatasaray’s 3-2 victory over Istanbul Basaksehir on Friday night and was substituted after complaining of discomfort.
The 27-year-old is expected to spend between three and four weeks on the sidelines, ruling him out of Galatasaray’s UEFA Champions League opener against Sporting Lisbon, as well as league fixtures against Kocaelispor and Trabzonspor.
The development is also a setback for Nigeria, with Osimhen now likely to miss the Super Eagles’ first two AFCON 2027 qualifying fixtures. Nigeria will begin its campaign against Madagascar on September 23 before travelling to face Guinea-Bissau four days later.
